Finding Work in the Oilsands

Many of you are looking for work in the oilsands due to the higher wages and availability of work. These jobs often have camp accommodation which includes shelter and food while on the job. Camps vary in size and amenities. Some are large with up to 2500 people and some can house between 15 and 30 people. Camp work is often desirable since your employer ‘pays’ for your accommodation and food which leaves you with more disposable income. Some employers may provide a living-out allowance (LOA) or housing allowance to offset the high cost of living in Fort McMurray. Housing allowances may only be temporary until workers are settled. Remember to research local housing options as part of your job search.

To look for oilsands jobs visit websites listed on the Job Links page of this website. Companies don’t always list whether the position includes camp accommodation. Industrial worksites (oilsands) will be more likely to provide camp accommodations. Check out these websites:

Consider the various tickets you may need to secure work in the oilsands. Note that regardless of the industry you're working in, if your job takes you onto an oilsands site, you will be required to have your Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) and Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) certification. Other tickets may be required. Consider making an appointment with an Employment Counsellor at your local employment centre to discuss your readiness for oilsands employment.
